Anthony and Laurie kick off the news with Anson Mount’s comments about Strange New Worlds’ take on Star Trek idealism and the issues raised in the season 1 finale, then recommend a look at the IDW comic miniseries that takes place between seasons 1 and 2 of the show. They mine Terry Matalas’ latest Twitter comments about Picard for hints about season 3, and then they’re ready to talk Prodigy. They enthusiastically review “Supernova, Part 1” and Tony makes his predictions for part 2 (which Laurie shouldn’t have watched already, but did). They wrap up the pod with Christmas and Hanukkah wishes for all, plus a playful interview with Zoe Saldaña and behind-the-scenes tidbits from Voyager guest star Kim Rhodes.

But if Kim Rhodes was on Star Trek: Enterprise, she might not have been able to be on the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and that would have been a shame.
I didn’t watch that, but I still get it, because she is awesome. I loved her on Another World, her first job!
I´m assuming a lot of people died on those other ships but they didn´t show it because it´s for kids. And I wonder if the finale will somehow change what happened with some timey wimey stuff involving the protostar drive.
Maybe the others will decide not to join Starfleet if Dal isn´t aloud to join.
Haven’t watched the episode yet but just finished listening to the podcast, which by the way I really enjoy and mostly always listen to before the episode… So I’m just going to comment on Kim Rhodes. I remember really liking her in Voyager. She really played that role so well. I even had somewhat of a crush on her, even in her Alien form… she just had a great personality. So now that I’m hearing that the idiot Hollywood types at the auditions called her fat… I find that utterly disgusting. This is 20+ years later so I do hope, especially with the “me too” movement, that Hollywood has become more sensitive and respectful and evolved, though somehow I doubt it.
I can’t believe you listen before you watch! I hope you skip the review and save it for afterwards. I don’t think Hollywood has evolved much when it comes to women and weight. I keep thinking I would’ve enjoyed Enterprise a lot more if Kim had played that role. (Sorry… I just never liked T’Pol and Kim would’ve given her some much-needed oomph.)
Nope, I listen to the entire podcast, not skipping anything! But I still enjoy the episode, which I just watched by the way, and I certainly understand Laurie how you couldn’t help yourself from watching part 2. This show does everything so well. Every demographic will find something there for them. Don’t be embarrassed for having cried (though I’m sure you weren’t really!)… I was crying BEFORE the bird-of-prey showed up… and I’m a late middle-aged man (I’m slightly embarrassed but my wife wasn’t there to see it)… they are conveying the wonderful Star Trek idealism in subtle, organic ways, not like another show that shall remain nameless. They give Starfleet the nobility it deserves. It really feels like the Star Trek Universe. Happy Holidays to the Trekmovie team, but especially to you Laurie and Anthony.
… And I should add that I didn’t like T’Pol either at first (or 7 of 9) because of that stupid cat suit. I mean, give us a well written story and layered characters and we’ll watch your show. We don’t need to see these attractive actresses with these skimpy outfits. It’s like they though 95% of the viewers were teen boys… but with COVID I’ve been rewatching Enterprise and Voyager and have come to appreciate both T’Pol and 7 of 9. I find that they are truly good actresses and it’s not their fault the producers were idiots. I know that’s harsh but it seems they were treating women like objects and I find that offensive.
I cried more than once for sure. It’s quite a show. As for the catsuits, I was unhappy when I saw photos of Seven of Nine but I was won over in her very first episode. When I rewatch now, I still can’t believe they made both Jeri and Jolene wear those insane outfits. Yeesh! I never warmed up to T’Pol; I just don’t think the character was written very well. I had a difficult time with T’Pol as well. It was her relationship with Trip that made me empathize with her, and appreciate her growing appreciation for humanity.
By contrast, I could never believe her respect for Archer. It always seemed forced, coming from neither the character nor the writing such that the performance wasn’t at all convincing.
That’s the problem in a nutshell: the T’Pol-Archer side of the triad was supposed to be the stronger dynamic by the show’s bible, but the T’Pol-Trip one was the one that actually had chemistry and felt earned.
Archer wasn’t written that well either, in my opinion. Trip was the standout character for me, Phlox and Hoshi were both interesting and fun too. Scott Bakula is a great actor but he didn’t have much to work with. But T’Pol was the worst; wildly inconsistent and often there for everyone to notice how hot she was. It was very frustrating to watch. I do think if Kim Rhodes had gotten the part, she would have brought a lot to it and spiced things up!
I remember having my issues with Enterprise early on. But it’s funny compared to Discovery and Picard so far at least, Enterprise is a freaking masterpiece. It’s funny I had so many issues with its first season but seasons 2 on I fell in love with it. Always loved Archer though. Took a season to like T’Pol and was an issue why I didn’t like season one in the beginning. Now she’s one of my top 10 favorite characters.
I prefer Discovery to Enterprise, I admit… and definitely some of Picard. But I’m glad we have the variety, right? Some people’s favorite is Enterprise, it’s all good. T’Pol is my least favorite main character of the franchise (not the actress’ fault), but if the character works for you, that’s awesome.
I will say I thought Discovery season 2 was on par with Enterprise season 2. But seasons 3 and 4 of Discovery were just bad IMO. No comment on Picard. But yes fans all have different opinions on various shows and movies. It what makes discussing them fun! Merry Christmas!
Fully agree on Enterprise. Fell in love with the show in it’s third season.
But Discovery just gets more dire. 🙄
On a different topic–the universal translator failure. What if most people on Federation member planets grow up learning only their own language instead of Federation Standard–because the universal translators are so–well, universal?
Well, there’s a difference between Federation plants and Starfleet. I would think that everyone at Starfleet Academy would learn Federation Standard as part of their training… that’s why the language exists, so people from different planets can speak to each other without having to learn a bajillion different languages. So anyone serving on a starship should speak it. I know it’s all fictional and whatnot but it seems… logical.
Wasn’t there a Discovery episode that did something similar where the universal translator failed and Saru had to translate between crew members?
Yes, we talked about it on the podcast. Season 2. It was scrambling everyone, so Detmer was speaking Arabic and Burnham was speaking Klingon, etc.
The universal translator is a silly, bogus idea that has never been used correctly and is often flat-out ignored. Not that that bothers me; it doesn’t, it’s just one of those things that one either accepts as a Trekkie or … doesn’t. (See also artificial gravity.) And if you don’t, then I honestly don’t know how you’d watch a single episode without going mad.
That being the case, I think it’s in Trek’s best interests to draw as little attention as possible to the entire idea. Every time they did it on Enterprise I wanted to hiss out of the side of my mouth at them and slap them on the wrist underneath a table. It was kind of the same in this episode of Prodigy, which was otherwise f—ing GREAT.

Totally agree! It’s a tricky one to get specific with because it doesn’t really make any sense. They need it for story purposes, but it’s best not to dig too deep.

#1 I’m happy to forget S2 of Picard. I think Paramount would too. I really hope S3 works out. I want this crew to get the conclusion they never got in the films.
#2 Gwyn’s speech brought a tear to me eye. That hasn’t happened since S2 of Disco when Spock said goodbye to his sister. Truly a wonderful and inspiring moment.
#3 My head canon says the construct would not allow the kids to destroy the ship. It reminds me of the AI on Disco ensuring its survival. Even if Jankom removed a dilithium piece, I bet you the construct would beam a new one in place.
