As noted in our latest book review, the rest of 2023 is devoid of any new Star Trek novel releases. But that will change in early 2024 with the release of a Star Trek: Picard tie-in novel.
Seven’s story in Star Trek: Picard: Firewall
Pocket Books has revealed Star Trek: Picard: Firewall, a new novel written by fan-favorite author David Mack. Due on February 27, 2024 the book is touted as a “thrilling prequel adventure” to Star Trek: Picard. The official indicates this book focuses on Seven of Nine:
Two years after the USS Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, Seven of Nine finds herself rejected for a position in Starfleet…and instead finds a new home with the interstellar rogue law enforcement corps known as the Fenris Rangers. The Rangers seem like an ideal fit for Seven—but to embrace this new destiny, she must leave behind all she’s ever known, and risk losing the most important thing in her life: her friendship with Admiral Kathryn Janeway.
After the book was revealed, Mack offered some insights on Twitter, including how he has wanted to tell this story for years. [NOTE: The artwork in Mack’s 2nd tweet is not the official cover art, which has yet to be revealed.]
P.S. This is a story I've wanted to tackle for a long time. The moment I first heard Seven mention the Fenris Rangers I emailed my editor asking to write this tale. It took 3 years to get permission.

Ugh. It’s comments like “X is prettier” that makes you wonder if that’s why the writers killed Shelby (having the experience of the Best of Both Worlds) while giving Seven the Enterprise. Just ick.
Sex/beauty sells whether you like it or not. She looks great on the posters, promotional material and on screen. Guaranteed she helped give the show a little more attention that it would of otherwise got.
I don’t so. I mean Picard S2 was panned as horrid and Seven was in it.
If there was something that saved Picard it was people crying over seeing the 1701-D and that’s the ugliest ship around regardless of how it recaptures how one felt when they were 8.
Oh and the evil Borg, a good scary dare I say ugly villain.
Just not into how they keep fast tracking people into Command positions versus learning and earning it working up the ranks. Where is Captain Shaw’s backstory on how the guy survived the Borg destroying his ship and learning to recover from that and realizing that maybe having an emotion attachment to when you were forced to kill and abuse others isn’t such a great thing to hold onto and is something to move on from? Hopefully Seven learns that lesson somewhere someway too.
I think this would be a very popular book, especially since most people wanted to hear about it more on the show itself, but in fairness could only cover so much given all the characters on it. So this should be interesting.
David Mack?! Instant buy. I’ve loved all his Trek novels; he can write an action scene like none other.
I remember a great Trek novel with the best stories written by fans(?) or independent writers. ‘A Ribbon for Rosie’ was a great story about how her family first met the Borg. Was excellent, despite it probably being overwritten by the canon police.
One of PICARD’s biggest missteps was in claiming Starfleet would refuse to let Seven join up after her four years of exemplary service aboard the Voyager, just because she’s a Borg. It makes no sense. Picard remained in Starfleet after nearly destroying the entire Federation! Chakotay (a traitor) returned to Starfleet after being assimilated, and Hugh (who’d been a Borg since birth) joined up as well, yet Seven–a bona fide hero–could not? Nonsensical. I hope David Mack addresses this.
Yes, thank you, it’s a strange, contradictory notion. There was also the Borg kid from Voyager whose name escapes me — eyeball guy. Wasn’t he also in Starfleet when he died?

Icheb, yep. That’s who I meant to say when I said “Hugh.” :) Also, even weirder is that Seven raised Icheb as her foster-son, but he was allowed in Starfleet and she wasn’t. What?
David Mack is a fantastic star trek writer and I’m definitely buying this one. I love Seven and David is perfect for this story.
I think both Seven’s adventures with the Fenris Rangers and Shaws experiences after WOLF 359 can be made into their own live action series down the line. Maybe 2-3 year shows like Picard.
I agree. I want to see that. I still say that I think Shaw should have been sent to serve on DS9 after Wolf 359 because it seemed like a lot of his issues were also ones that Ben Sisko had.
