While this morning’s Emmy nominations fell short of hopes for Star Trek television, Star Trek books are faring better with 3 nominations from the Scribe Awards.
3 Star Trek novels honored
The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers announced nominees for their annual Scribe Awards, which “acknowledge and celebrate excellence in licensed tie-in works based on TV shows, movies, and games.” This year Star Trek picked up three nominations across two categories, with a TOS book and SNW book recognized in the Best Novel category and a Prodigy book for Best Young Adult / Middle Grade Novel.
In the Best Original Novel – Speculative category, both Star Trek Strange New Worlds High Country by John Jackson Miller and Star Trek Original Series Harm’s Way by David Mack were nominated. The other nominees are League of Legends Ruination by Anthony Reynolds, Marvel Crisis Protocol Shadow Avengers by Carrie Harris, and World of Warcraft Sylvanas by Christie Golden. Last year Jackson won this award for Star Trek: Picard – Rogue Elements (see TrekMovie review).
Both of those Trek novels had praise here at TrekMovie. Reviewer Denes House called High Country “a high-stakes adventure packed with interesting and creative ideas” that was “difficult to put down.” Denes hailed David Mack’s Harm’s Way as “a home run of a yarn that does everything you’d hope a Trek novel would do” dubbing it the best Trek novel of 2022.
Star Trek Prodigy: A Dangerous Trade written by Cassandra Rose Clarke was nominated for Best Young Adult / Middle Grade Novel. It is going up against Squirrel Girl Universe by Tristan Palmgren, Star Wars: The High Republic – Quest for the Hidden City by George Mann, The Mystery of Lucy Wilson: Memories of the Future by George Ivanoff, and Tower of Nerek by David Guymer.
The winners will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con Friday, on July 21.
ICYMI: Trek comics nominated for Eisner Awards
This has been a good year for Trek tie-ins as IDW comics were also recently nominated for two Eisner Awards, which are considered the most prestigious honors for comics. The Eisner Award ceremony is also being held next Friday at San Diego Comic-Con. Star Trek #400 (edited by Heather Antos) is nominated for Best Single Issue/One-Shot, going up against Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler (DC), Mary Jane & Black Cat Beyond (Marvel), Moon Knight: Black, White, and Blood #3 (Marvel), and A Vicious Circle Book 1 (BOOM! Studios). And the ongoing Star Trek series (written by Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing with art by Ramon Rosanas) was nominated for Best New Series. It is going up against The Atonement Bell (Red 5), Love Everlasting (Image), Public Domain (Image), and Traveling to Mars (Ablaze).

I guess we’re in awards season or something lol, but this is pretty cool.
And sigh, Prodigy. The knife just feels like it goes in deeper every time this show still finds acclaim in every little way.
Prodigy — the one modern Trek animated series that is getting continually recognized as exceptional, yet it got the chopping block versus the lowbrow cartoon sitcom.
This is just not right!
Score another win for mediocrity over quality.
