The previous entry in our ‘Best of Trek 2008’ series looked at all the top stories related to Paramount’s Star Trek movie over the last year. Today we look at all the other official productions related to Star Trek coming from CBS and the various official licensees, including picking our favorite Trek episode, DVD, book, comics, and events of the year.

Preview of Star Trek Books For 2009 (and 2010)

Fans of Star Trek novels have a lot of variety to look forward to in 2009. Pocket Books has scheduled books from all five TV series as well as some of the novel-only series. TrekMovie, with the help of Pocket’s Trek editor Margaret Clark, has put together an overview of the upcoming year with exclusive new details, new covers, and and even a sketch of the USS Aventine. We even have some hints of what to expect in 2010.


Super High Resolution Images For ‘Star Trek’ 2009

This morning Paramount Pictures released their ‘2009 Press Preview Kit.’ It includes brief overviews and some images for each of their 16 feature films slated for 2009. For Star Trek none of info was new and the four images were all previously released, however they were in super high resolution (including the image of the new USS Enterprise). Novel Excerpt: Star Trek A Singular Destiny

Since TrekMovie revealed the first exclusive image of the USS Kelvin in October, this new ship from the upcoming Star Trek movie has been the subject of much fan discussion. We have seen more of the Kelvin in the trailer and at the Intel promo site, but as with many things with Trek, fans have decided to take it upon themselves to get a closer look.

Cryptic Studios has a Christmas presents today for fans of the upcoming Star Trek Online massive multiplayer game. They have a new feature on their official site, introducing us to the first of the new ships for the game. The breakdown of the Federation Starship NX-91001, a successor to the Sovereign class (the USS Enterprise E type) is just full of fun Treknobabble. Full details below.

There are many great things about the holidays, from time with family to the food, from charity to traditions. Of course, the holiday season is a great time to give to others, and many Star Trek episodes and feature films reveal the importance of giving to others. We have the Enterprise in 2008 holiday parades, new Star Trek Christmas music, and a new fan made Trek episode all about X-Mas. Plus a few other things, including a very special holiday bunny.


Watch The Simon Pegg Christmas Special

On Sunday night Star Trek’s new Scotty Simon Pegg was the guest host on the Christmas edition of Sunday Night Project, a comedy show airing on the UK’s Channel 4. Pegg talked (and joked) about the new Trek a bit with the show’s regular hosts Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr, and generally had a good time. The whole show is on YouTube now and a fun watch for Pegg fans, check it out below.  


A Holiday Update From JJ Abrams

The new Star Trek movie is 136 days away, but the original plan was for it to be here in just three days, on Christmas. Back in February Paramount moved the film to the bigger summer season, but director JJ Abrams has pretty much stuck with his original schedule. Today Abrams posted a comment for fans at the official Star Trek Facebook page about the status of the movie. Read it below.

Sunday Movie – “Trek Through Time”

Our friends at Kelvington.com have put together a fun a special Christmas present for fans of Star Trek, as well as fans of the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who. "Trek Through Time" is an excellent and cleverly edited video ‘mashup’ episode that brings the good Doctor and his trusty TARDIS face to face with Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise. It is been a while since we have done an update on Fringe, the new show from the Star Trek team of JJ Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Sci-Fi Saturday: Forbidden Planet, Buck Rogers, Terminator, Watchmen, Battlestar, Stargates, Dr. Who + more

It is usually slow towards the end of the year, but there is a ton of genre news this week. We got James Cameron tied to Forbidden Planet, Frank Miller tied to Buck Rogers, Kenneth Branaugh tied to Thor and so much more, including trailers and images. In TV there are updates including previews on Stargate(s), Battlestars plus more previews, including the Doctor Who X-Mas special.


FanMade: Review Star Trek Phase II “Blood and Fire, Part 1”

Coming in just under the wire, today the fan series Star Trek Phase II released their first (and only) episode of the year (and their first since changing names from New Voyages).
